PHASE 2 ARTISTS

ARTIST: Annie Bousfield

About the Artist: Annie lives in Easingwold, North Yorkshire and painting is her passion.

“I embraced this love of painting along with my past careers in nursing and podiatry and now I’m lucky enough to be able to dedicate much more time to it. My biggest passion is being out in the countryside, right in the middle of it all, and my colourful textured painting is in some ways just 'what I bring home.'

We aren't on this planet for long so let's do something that makes us happy.”

Why I want to be involved:

As an artist with a presence already at Number 9 and being very impressed by their enthusiasm and effort toward the local community I feel that I'd like to further cement my 'Hornsea connection' and this would be a great opportunity to do that (and of course promote my own works).

ARTIST: Emily Dodgson

Business Name: Dream BIG Studio

About the Artist:

Emily has been painting murals for over ten years, transforming the walls of private homes, businesses and numerous schools across Yorkshire. Specialising in creating spaces for young people, she has painted a wide range of themes and subjects over the years. From jungles and woodlands full of animals to the far reaches outer space and the depths of the ocean. The natural world plays a central role in her work, with bringing the outdoors in often at the heart of her designs. Her murals aim to spark curiosity, inspire imagination, and create spaces that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

“I love walking along the beach, scouring the stones, shells, and seaweed for interesting colours, patterns, and textures. I’ve chosen to capture one of these shoreline moments in a kaleidoscopic pattern. A single turn of the lens brings a new image just like the waves redrawing the patterns on the sand, what was there one second can be completely changed in the next.”

Why I want to be involved:

I moved to Hornsea last year, a temporary move that quickly became permanent after immediately feeling at home and falling love with the towns character. I would be thrilled to be part of the project, to give back to the community that has made me feel so welcomed. and to capture a part of the landscape that has so inspired.

ARTIST: Helen Gill

Business name: River Head Studio

About the Artist:

“I am an East Yorkshire based artist with a degree in Graphic Design / Illustration. I am inspired by the local landscape and coast and like to go out with sketchbook and pen drawing on location. My studio work includes acrylic & watercolour painting and printmaking.

I was one of the artists selected to paint a sculpture for the ‘Mischief of Rats’ trail which took place around Hull and the East Riding in 2025. My design ‘Pi-rat’ is now permanently situated in Pickering Park, Hull.”

Why I want to be involved:

After participating in the ‘Mischief of Rats’ trail I have first hand experience of the delight and value an art trail can bring to a community. As an artist I enjoy the process of bringing a design to life. I think the Starfish Galaxy trail is a wonderful idea and I would love to be involved

ARTIST: Jayde Marr

About the Artist:

Hello, my name is Jayde Marr. I’m an artist and teacher based by the sea in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

I am a self-taught artist inspired by the beauty of the natural world. My work reflects a deep appreciation for the colours, textures, and emotions found in the landscapes and environments around us. Being self-taught has given my practice a strong sense of authenticity. I have spent my life exploring creativity, continually developing and refining my artistic skills.

My ethos centres on experimentation, embracing mistakes, celebrating imperfection, and encouraging honest self-expression through art.

Why I want to be involved:

I would love to contribute to the sense of positivity that the starfish sculpture project will bring to the community. We live in a world that could always benefit from more kindness, optimism, and uplifting energy, and it would be incredibly rewarding to know that my work might brighten someone’s day, even in a small way.

I’m especially passionate about inspiring young people within our community, showing them that creativity is not only valuable, but essential. I want to help demonstrate that artistic expression holds just as much importance as any other discipline, and that creative ambitions are not only valid, but achievable.

Through this project, I hope to play a small part in encouraging others to see the beauty in creativity and to feel confident in pursuing their own ideas and aspirations.

ARTIST: Joanne Simpson

About the Artist:

“My artistic style interprets what I have discovered or observed around me in several different styles or formats.  I am inspired by the places I visit, memories, animals, the coastline and nature.

I paint and draw both representative and made-up scenes based on my surroundings. Abstract concepts, still-life and natural forms also feature. I like to experiment with various mediums and my style is generally naïve and quirky.

I am drawn to strong bold colours, patterns and textures so incorporate these into my art.

My intention is to create art that brightens moods or resonates with the viewer in some way. My appreciation of my environment, memories and inspirations are demonstrated through my art work.”

Why I want to be involved:

I found myself being drawn to this project as even though I mainly work alone, I wanted to be part of a creative group where all our visions intertwine with each other to create connection and a vibrant display.  I feel the Starfish galaxy trail will capture the magic of our coastline and town whilst reinforcing its importance and strength as a community.

The intention of my design is to uplift those who view it and to demonstrate appreciation for the wonders of the ocean in a colourful meaningful way.

ARTIST: Mirella Dry

About the Artist:

Hey, I’m Mirella and I’m a Print Designer based in East Yorkshire! Whilst studying for my BA (Hons) in Print Design, I found my love for bold, bright and vibrant colour. I would describe my artist style as playful; combining a mixture of hand drawn/painted elements as well as highly executed digital design. I love using many different mediums to create new pattern ideas. Through my own creative practice, I have developed a passion for heritage crafts. I am a trained screen printer and have worked as a Head Screen Print technician. As well as my passion for screen print, I also practice other heritage crafts like lace making, crochet, knitting (machine & hand) to name a few.

Why I want to be involved:

Being a part of the Starfish Galaxy will allow me to connect with the wider community, share my art and take part in something important. I have always wanted to take part in a sculpture trail and create a design which represents our community and the mission of the trail - the importance of caring for our waters and beaches.
