ARTIST: Katy Cobb
Business name: Wall Things Bright & Beautiful
About the Artist: Katy Cobb, known as Wall Things Bright and Beautiful is an artist living in Tickton, East Riding, painting murals and street art in the local area.
Katy has a degree in Fine Art and Art History and has always enjoyed painting on a large scale. Her work predominantly features nature themes – taking inspiration from local wildlife and wildflowers, often with a whimsical, fairytale feel.
Katy took part in ‘Puffins Galore’, a trail of puffin sculptures across East Riding in 2022. She was lucky enough to be selected to paint two sculptures – one situated on Hornsea Promenade, the other in Saturday Market, Beverley. The latter of these was auctioned off and raised £14,200 for Hornsea Inshore Rescue, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, RSPB and RNLI.
She has also painted a sculpture for the ‘Mischief of Rats’ trail taking place in Hull summer 2025.
Why I want to be involved: I love sculpture trails. They provide accessible art for everyone. They offer a free, outdoor, screen-free activity for families (as a Mum I appreciate the value in this!) This trail will encourage visitors into the town to visit all Hornsea’s great independent businesses, with a valuable message about caring for our coastal habitat.
I really enjoy the challenge of painting large, 3D sculptures, and love seeing the interpretations of other artists.
ARTIST: Emma Garness
About the Artist: I am a muralist and painter based in Beverley. My art practice is intuitive exploring the layers between the natural world, the personal, the visible and the invisible. Having spent time learning how to upscale artwork as a scenic painter in Leicester, I quickly adapted and explored this artistic language in street art and murals. My work has expanded to working within community art projects such as Shorelines Project, Hull University Risky Cities and Community Action for Water. For ever needing to learn and evolve my practice, I am part of the Creative Cafe run by Perienne Christian, a teacher at the Royal Drawing School.
Why I want to be involved: The art sculpture trails are such a community inspiration and joy for everyone to follow and spot, having seen and been part of the puffin's galore trail, these trails help creative stretch our skills to help bring awareness, inspire and raise funds for local charities, win win.
Very much looking forward to painting the starfish and being part of your trail.
ARTIST: Helen Rowland
Business name: Helen Rowland Art
About the Artist: Helen is an abstract landscape painter based in Leven, close to Hornsea.
Her paintings are a sensory reaction to the landscape or sea. Joyous with strong use of colour and expressive brush marks, Helen’s paintings celebrate the ever-changing seas and skies of the east coast, which are her constant source of inspiration.
Helen trained at Edinburgh College of Art. It was there that she fell in love with creating large, bold and colourful paintings. Helen’s paintings can be found in galleries locally and in Edinburgh.
Why I want to be involved: I’m interested by the sea and sky. Living near the coast, it’s important for me to be by the sea. I’m particularly drawn at the start and end of the day, when the changing colour and light of the sky are reflected back off the water.
Walking on the beach in Hornsea at sunrise is a reset, an energising and spiritual experience full of positive energy, that I want to share with residents and visitors to the Starfish trail.
ARTIST: Tom Everard
About the Artist: Tom is a part time and self-taught artist living in Hornsea.
“My life as an artist started after travelling with my wife around south east Asia and Australia and seeing beautiful places being ruined by plastic pollution.
I decided to create sea life inspired bottle top art with found, and donated bottle tops to generate awareness through interesting and thought provoking pieces which were later hung in Tesco. I have created murals for several businesses in Hornsea and have others planned for 2025.
My acrylic works are always inspired by nature and the ocean and have spanned through various subject matter. I am currently enjoying exploring abstract art and the freedom it has given me.”
Why I want to be involved: I wanted to be part of the Starfish Galaxy trail as I thought it played to my strengths as an artist and is a great platform to push the message of sustainability and reducing our plastic consumption to a wider audience.
